Up North, Up North, Wandering the Wild Elephants

Up north, up north
The wild elephants are wandering
Farewell to Banna, farewell to my hometown
Say goodbye to the past
I gaze at your figures
I feel your solemn and stirring
Wetlands have become farmland and pastures
Rainforests have been reduced to rubber forests and tea hills
Your home is shrinking
Pollution, drought, your hunger and thirst
Endangered to extinction, survival is becoming more and more difficult
Up north, up north
Farewell to home, farewell to partners
Say goodbye to the past
I hear your sighs
I see your confusion
You love the South, however
The forests over there are being cut down, too
Green mountain was dug into gems and jade mines
There are bandits over there who hunt and kill the elephants to obtain ivories
Shots rang out and the fighting resumed
The dictator is slaughtering the city and the lives are being slaughtered
Up north, up north
Over the mountains, through the city across the countryside
Say goodbye to the past
I’ve seen your power
I have heard you sing
You stood out after the dinosaurs died out
Be the kindest king of nature on earth
No rivals – the tiger, the leopard, And the wolf
You have covered all the rivers and mountains of Asia
And your Cousins, the mammoths
Were crossing the Bering Strait and traversing the American rivers
Up north, up north
To seek survival, to find hope
Say goodbye to the past
I hear your Lamentations
I see your sadness
Your goodness is no match for human cruelty
Your magnificent tusks cannot escape human’s greed
Zhoukoudian has your remains
Sanxingdui is buried with your tusks
So you are enslaved and deprived of your freedom
So your flesh and blood went into the soup pot of mankind
After they had had enough wine, they began to play mahjong made of ivory
Or listen to the music that pops up on ivory keyboards
Up north, up north
Through the prison of grief, wander across the Ailao Mountain, and stride over Hengduan Mountain of broad land of Yunnan
Say goodbye to the past
You are the children of God and the ambassadors of the Buddha
On the banks of the Ganges, beside the Buddha
who is mighty and strong, but he never kills or eats meat
Today you walk through streets and alleys, walking by night and lying by day
Show no hatred when you face to human, your natural enemies,
No revenge, no casualties
With a smile and a wave of giant ears
I prayed deeply in front of the Buddha
May you find a new home
An endless bounty of plantains,
On the edge of the forest,
Gesang flowers are fluttering in the wind
The stars are shining and the solar wind is calling
You convey the compassion of the Buddha to mankind
Up north, up north, wandering wild elephants
Wish you a safe journey!
